Two blood-red rivers 01 molten rock poured almost a mile dow~ the mountainside. Some of Europe's most famous vul· canologists who came to watch said Iherc was no imminent danger to the lourist-crowded seafront towns 10 to 12 miles away at the root of the volcano_ The experts said the lava (low had Increased to as great a rate as in the big 1964 eruption when a million tons of molten rock was spewed out in nine days.
